On Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal Acting Premier, Honourable Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, attended the mass funeral of the Khambule family in Hlokozi, Highflats, following the tragic incident that claimed the lives of seven family members. The heartbreaking event, which has left the community in mourning, saw hundreds of residents, local leaders, and officials gather to pay their final respects and support the grieving family.
The tragic incident occurred earlier this month when several members of the Khambule family were brutally murdered at their home in a senseless act of violence that shocked the entire province. The loss of life has not only devastated the Khambule family but has also raised concerns about the rising violence in rural communities.
In her heartfelt address, Acting Premier Madlopha-Mthethwa extended her deepest sympathies to the Khambule family and pledged that the provincial government would provide continuous support during this difficult time. She reassured the family and the wider community that the government, through its social services, would offer counselling and assistance to help them cope with the trauma of losing loved ones in such a violent manner.
“We stand united in grief with the Khambule family and the community of Hlokozi. This tragic event reminds us of the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all our citizens, particularly in rural areas where violent crime has escalated,” said Acting Premier Madlopha-Mthethwa. “As government, we will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice.”
The Acting Premier was accompanied by several provincial dignitaries, including members of the Executive Council (MECs), local mayors, and traditional leaders. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to addressing violence and insecurity in rural areas. The Provincial Government also announced that it would assist with the funeral arrangements, covering some of the expenses to ensure the family could lay their loved ones to rest with dignity.
In her remarks, Acting Premier Madlopha-Mthethwa also emphasised the need for communities to work closely with local authorities and law enforcement to prevent such tragedies from happening again. “We must all come together, as government and community members, to create safe environments for our families and children. The violence that has claimed the lives of the Khambule family must be a call to action for all of us.”
The community of Hlokozi came out in large numbers, demonstrating their solidarity with the Khambule family. Traditional leaders and elders from surrounding areas also participated in the ceremony, highlighting the cultural importance of unity and support during times of grief.
