30 July 2025, MEC Shinga from the Department of Social Development in his capacity as the MEC champion for Ugu District companied by the Acting Head of Department Ms Nokuthula Khanyile led a delegation to ward 6 under uMthonjaneni Local Municipality with a sole purpose of visiting projects and programs which are currently being rolled out in the area.
This visit is part of the DDM programme which is led by the Honourable Premier Thami Ntuli supported by his cabinet in their respective portfolios. The day started with a war room briefing where MEC Shinga was briefed on all issues affecting the ward through a war room report. The delegation proceeded to all identified projects with a view of providing solutions and assistance where it needed.
Some of the issues and successes that were identified were as follows:
. There is an electrification project which was started in 2021, 50 households have been connected so far.
. Water reticulation, there is a bulk water project that is currently underway which will assist the community of ward 5 with uninterrupted water supply since there is a shortage of water in the area.
. Luncheon club members received donations from the MEC in the form of blankets as well as food parks.
. Shortage of CCG’s, there is a shortage of CCG’s who are suppose to assist with identifying and assist those who are ill and elderly in taking their medication.
. Bazothini farming, MEC requested the department of Agriculture to provide assistance in the form of seeds and plowing tools after they indicated that they need assistance.
The delegation then moved to the debriefing session which was led by the Honourable Premier Thami Ntuli and amongst other things that the Premier highlighted were as follows:
. Requested members of the community to join community safety structures, to fight against crime in their areas.
. Requested the Mayor of UMthonjaneni Local Municipality to work with Mr Nyawose from the department of Community Safety and Liaison in ensuring that all wards in the municipality have community safety structures.
