To add value in rural safety, the department will work closely with traditional leadership to get firsthand information from the authorities and affected communities. This will be done through attending traditional council meetings. It is of importance to have safety plan specifically designed to respond to rural safety issues and crime prevention thereof. The Traditional Courts Act has been passed, therefore is it critical for the Department to capacitate SAPS and communities on how to distinguish between jurisdictions of the traditional courts and those of DOJ&CD courts in terms of case management.
It is important that traditional leadership is capacitated on safety and crime prevention matters as this will enhance response to rural safety and crime prevention mechanisms. A holistic Rural safety programme will respond to issues of stock theft, GBVF, ukuthwala, farm killings, land conflicts, drug and substance abuse. The sub- programme will also focus on conflict resolution for farm communities. The department will also work with farm watches, as a way of improving the community policing approach.
