KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, has strongly condemned the appalling discovery of a police officer’s involvement in the brutal hijacking that claimed the life of 11-year-old Zarah Ramsamy in Malvern last month. The arrest of the 27-year-old constable from Cato Manor, linked to this horrific crime, has deeply shaken public trust in the police.
“It is a profound betrayal when those sworn to protect the public are found engaging in such despicable acts. The actions of this rogue officer are a disgrace to the uniform and a violation of the public’s trust. There is no place for individuals like this in our police force,” Premier Ntuli stated.
The Premier also praised the rapid and coordinated efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the arrest. Early this morning, the DPCI Provincial Tracking Team, DPCI Anti-Gang Unit, Provincial TRT, PMB K9, Provincial Forensics Leads Unit, Metro Police Special Operations Directorate, SAPS CI eThekwini District, Fidelity SIU, Hawks Protection Services, and Magma Security & Investigations worked together to apprehend the officer at his home in Seaview.
“I commend the dedicated efforts of these agencies. Their swift action in tracking down this rogue officer is a testament to the commitment of our law enforcement teams. This sends a strong message that no one, not even members of the police, is above the law.”
The arrested officer was found in possession of a bank card stolen during the hijacking of a Toyota Fortuner belonging to the Ramsamy family, which resulted in young Zarah tragically losing her life. Additional incriminating items, including cellphones, number plates, and numerous new bank cards, were also discovered.
Premier Ntuli extended his deepest condolences to the Ramsamy family and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rooting out criminal elements within the police. “Our hearts go out to the Ramsamy family as they mourn the senseless loss of their daughter. While this arrest brings some comfort, our work is far from over. Every individual involved in this heinous crime must face justice.”
The Premier urged citizens to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by reporting misconduct and working together to create safer communities.
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our police force. To those officers who choose to betray their oath, know that your actions will not go unpunished. We remain committed to rebuilding trust and ensuring the safety of all our citizens.”
