Brutal scenes of gender-based violence and femicide have once again gripped Umdoni Local Municipality. A suspect allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her sister before taking his own life at Nkonka Ward, Lindelani village.
The incident occurred yesterday (30 March 2025). A woman from the neighbouring house, who tried to intervene, was also shot and wounded by the suspect. The wounded woman is recovering in hospital.
Today, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli visited the families of the murdered women, Nandipha Lifana 36 and Nangamso Lifana 28 to convey condolences on behalf of the provincial government. The Premier also visited the family of the wounded woman, and wished her a speedy recovery.
Premier Ntuli said this devastating incident highlights the continuing scourge of GBV-F, which the provincial government is fiercely fighting.
The gruesome murder follows that of Nontobeko Cele, also of Umzinto from KwaCele village, who was brutally killed by her boyfriend who later posted her lifeless body on social media platforms, and thereafter took his own life. Nontobeko’s funeral took place on December 23 last year.
Premier condemned the killing of the two sisters, and urged women to flee from abusive relationships before it is too late, and discouraged families who urge women to stay in such toxic relationships.
