PREMIER NTULI STANDS WITH MJILO FAMILY, CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, today attended the court proceedings of Mfanafuthi Kunene at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. Kunene faces charges of the kidnapping and murder of 23-year-old Ayabonga Mjilo, whose tragic death has shaken the province.
Premier Ntuli’s presence highlighted the Provincial Government’s steadfast commitment to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and supporting victims’ families.
Speaking outside the court, Premier Ntuli expressed his condolences and urged for justice to be served:
“The brutal loss of Ayabonga’s life cannot go unpunished. KwaZulu-Natal cannot tolerate such barbaric acts. Justice must prevail, and we call for the harshest penalties for those responsible for these heinous crimes.”
Premier Ntuli assured the Mjilo family of the government’s continued support, including assistance from the Department of Community Safety to help with funeral arrangements and access to psychological care.
He also issued a strong appeal to victims of gender-based violence:
“I urge all victims not to withdraw their cases. Withdrawing allows perpetrators to escape accountability and hinders our fight against this scourge. Stand strong and know that the government and law enforcement are here to support you.”
The Premier commended the community for their solidarity with the Mjilo family and urged all citizens to unite in the fight against GBV:
“Let us continue working together to build a society where women and children can live without fear. We must root out this violence and ensure KwaZulu-Natal becomes a beacon of safety and justice.”
He emphasized that collaboration between all sectors, including traditional leaders, communities, and law enforcement, is vital to creating a safer province.
