PURPOSE
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Community Safety and Liaison has a Legal Administrative Support Directorate which provides legal services to the Department.
Legal Services is a support services that renders effective legal service to the Department. It role is informed by the mission statement of the Department which is to be the lead agency in driving the integration of community initiatives towards a crime free KwaZulu-Natal.
FUNCTIONS
It involves rendering legal advice, giving regular updates on legislative development, being involved in policy formation, drafting, vetting of contracts, legislation and other legal documents. The department is able to embark upon and achieve their aims and objectives by identifying and overcoming legal hurdles towards this.
This is done by:

Rendering legal advice and support to the MEC and the Head of Department.

Managing legislation by and against the Department.

Rendering an indirect legal service to the community and police services through other divisions in the Department with direct contact with the community and police. Any matter relating to the mandates of the Department with legal implications may therefore be referred to the Directorate.

Coordinate the KZN Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster and monitor their programmes of actions.

Editing and drafting of contracts, policy documents and other legal documents.

Give legal opinions.
